Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, born within Long Beach California. DuVernay was raised by her aunt Denise, who encouraged DuVernay to develop her creativity and was instilled by the arts. Aunt Denise worked the night shift as a nurse to ensure she could indulge her passion of theater and literature throughout the day. She introduced DuVernay the 1961 film West Side Story and DuVernay discovered a love for it. DuVernay was trained by her mother to understand that art could serve to engage people. Similar to DuVernay's mom, she was well-educated and encouraged the importance of speaking up through the art of. Although DuVernay was raised in Compton and with her extended family, she was a summer resident living in Lowndes County Alabama where her dad's family was a part of the same for several generations. Her father was awed by the Civil Rights movement's historic march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in neighboring Selma Alabama. Her time in Selma would later inspire her to direct a movie about The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as the Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay was awarded her high school diploma from Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. DuVernay attended University of California Los Angeles upon graduation. There she received certificates in English and African American Studies. DuVernay began producing for the broadcast industry while she was in her university. She began her career as an intern for CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being given an assignment to watch the residence and scrutinizing the garbage of one of jurors. She was disappointed by her journalism tasks and decided to switch over to the field of public relations. DuVernay began her first position as a publicity specialist in an unassuming production studio after graduating from college. After this, she founded her own company for public relations named The DuVernay Agency in 1999.
